"13 And it was so, that when they that bare the ark of the LORD had gone six paces, he sacrificed oxen and fatlings. 14 And David danced before the LORD with all his might; and David was girded with a linen ephod. 15 So David and all the house of Israel brought up the ark of the LORD with shouting, and with the sound of the trumpet. (2 Samuel 6:13-15)
This passage describes when David had brought in the Ark of the Covenant, back from Gibeah. More specifically, this passage happened right after David and his men dropped the ark off at the house of Obededom because one of the men did not handle the ark correctly and he was killed "for his error." David then realized that this is serious business and he cannot mess around to get this thing back where it belongs. Israel has been left with a void in their society for 20 years as the presence of the Almighty God is no longer dwelling there. David did not ask a heathen or a false prophet on how to handle this thing, but instead he sought the Lord on how to handle the ark. 3 months later he returned to Obededom's house, and brought the ark to the city of David. It is said that he had to carry it 9 miles from where it was to where it needed to be, but still David took time to sacrifice oxen and fatlings every 6 steps and he danced with everything he had.
The question that I propose to you today is that... Was all of that really necessary for David to do? I do not know completely if it was or not, but i do know this, David wanted to make sure it was right the way he was doing it. He did not want to fail at this twice, so he went above and beyond what was required in order to make sure they were carrying it correctly, according to God.
Is our sacrifice of prayer, worship, consecration, and standards required? Some are commandments, others are just going above and beyond, but we need to do these things in order to make sure that we make on the day of Judgement. I don't know about you but I do not want to be wrong on that day. What our pastor's say is the minimum but we need to go beyond that in order to secure our salvation and make sure we are right when He comes back.
